Very Jane Austen

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, I'm sure most people will have watched or heard about the new period drama Downton Abbey and I finally got a chance to finish the episodes yesterday.
I must say, the series blew me away. It's like a brew of Jane Austen's collective works and Alcott's 'Little Women' except in an aristocratic setting. However, the best thing about this period drama is that it not only focuses on the lives of the upperclass but also on the lives of the servants who live and work in the manor. The story alternates between the masters and the servants, sometimes together when the plots entwines.

In short, Downton Abbey is about an aristocratic family with three daughters: Mary, Edith and Sybil. The story starts with news of the sinking of the Titanic and the apparent death of Lord Grantham's (father) cousin and heir. This plays a major part in the series' plot as the family deals with who the next heir will be and their own fates. Events then unfolds with the search for a suitable husband for Mary (the eldest), unrest within the servant quarters, a lot of backstabbing, jealousy and even hints of homosexuality (I'm not going to spoil who it is).

I'll have to say that my favourite character from the entire series is The Cook. I know, I know, what the hell right? She doesn't get much screening time but she's such a funny character especially towards the end of Season One when she tries to sabotage the new cook! Okay, enough spoilers.

Oh and I also love Maggie Smith's character. Granny is always so strict...very reminiscent of Professor McGonagall. I don't know if her character's suppose to be comedic but I find her appearances/role very funny.

Also, Penelope Wilson plays Isobel Crawley in this show. The mother of the next heir to Downton Abbey and also a nurse. There's an ongoing feud between Mrs. Crawley and Granny because Granny Crawley feels that a working class relative shouldn't be allowed to integrate into aristocratic society.
Or maybe it's just disapproval? Bitterness maybe?

  "Harriet Jones, Prime Minister"
"Yes, we know who you are..."

LOL...sorry couldn't resist a Dr Who reference XD. If you don't get it, then ignore this XD.

All in all, it's definitely a series worth watching. The next season will be out soon and I really can't wait. If you're into classics like Jane Austen and Bronte, then you'll LOVE this new drama. If period drama's not your thing, then GIVE THIS ONE A TRY!
