Amy's Guide to All Nighters

Seeing as I just endured MY biggest all-nighter spree, I decided it was appropriate to make this guide NOW. 3 nights in a row, I gave up sleep to do my uni work...although I did get an hour or two in during one Monday afternoon.
Still, it's a painful process.
So here's a guide to all those aspiring to break my record...(I'm sure many of you have but whatever).
PS: Forgive me if I make errors...I'm writing this with 3 days worth of no-sleep...so bare with me :D

Amy's Guide to All-Nighters

1) The first rule to all-nighters is...KEEP YOUR ROOM AS BRIGHT AS POSSIBLE!!!  I found (from experience) that I was less inclined to want to go to bed when all the lights in my room is open. I guess the brightness sort of tricks my brain into thinking it's only 10:00pm or something like that. But this really works, at least for me anyway!!

2) You need at least 2 cups of coffee (WITH NO SUGAR) when you start your all-nighter!! Energy drinks like V and Mother can never replace a good cup of coffee. Best results (for me) comes from coffee with no sugar and as little milk as possible. I find that whenever I drink something that's too milky, my body starts to shut down. Probably because milk helps people get to sleep.

3) Don't eat anything unless you're hungry. When you're on a full stomach, you body will try to sleep. That's why they say you tend to fall asleep faster when your stomach is full. Your body will feel so content that it won't bother trying to stay active. You're more alert when you're hungry after all :)

4) Find moral support!! If you're pulling an all-nighter due to an assignment, chances are, so are a lot of other people. So hop onto facebook (not too much of course), create a status alerting everyone who is going to sleep late that you'll be available throughout the night. You can then share your all-nighter pains with those who are suffering just like you.

5) Don't wear too much clothes! Wearing lots of clothes = warm bed + blanket. When you're all warm and cozy, it's almost a given that you'll want to sleep. So the best thing to do to keep yourself awake is to wear as less as you can tolerate. But I don't recommend short-sleeves and shorts in the middle of winter. You should know your limits. Don't get too comfortable but not so uncomfortable that you get sick.

6) Make sure there's lots of fresh air! Open your windows to get fresh air circulating. Your body shuts down (sort of) when there's lack of oxygen. You tend to be more drowsy when you're inside your stuffy room than when you're outside. Fresh (preferably cold) air wakes you up immediately.

7) Wash your face!! This is something one of my friends told me to do and it works! When you feel like all your energy's been drained from your body, take a small break and head for the bathroom. Washing your face (preferably with a towel and warm water) will relax but wake you up at the same time. I don't recommend using cold water...because that'll make you feel sick in the long run. Warm water is the best way to go.

8) Don't think about things like "I think I'll sleep for about an hour then get up to continue my work". Seriously? An hour? Believe me when I say it'll make you feel more tired. Plus it'll give you really bad dark circles. Once again, from experience, I find that the dark circles don't appear on my face if I DONT SLEEP AT ALL. Rather, if I slept for 2 hours and then wake up, the dark circles will be pretty visible.

9) If you need to stay constantly alert throughout your all-nighter, it's best if you drink a cup off coffee or similar every 2 hours. Yes, it is bad for you if you do it ALL THE TIME...but I'm suggesting this only if it's an emergency. Don't go for energy drinks...they're fizzy and makes you want to burp all the time. Coffee kind of gets rid of your hunger as well.

10) Finally, it's bad to pull all-nighters all the time. So don't do it unless you have to. Yes, I'm such a hypocrite. But I really don't RECOMMEND all-nighters to anyone who's younger than 18 years of age unless they're in their HSC year. Even so, unless you do art, design and technology or similar and have your major work DUE...then its a bad idea to study math (or whatever subject you're doing) through-out the night. Chances are, you won't absorb much, then you'll be sleepy for your exam.

So yeah, that's all. It's 7:00am in the morning now. I wasted about...40minutes typing this up. Probably will have lots of mistakes but I'm too tired to check them. Will do so later.
Gonna get ready for uni in about 2 hours...or less.

Bye for now. Happy sleeping :D

Something Awesome...

...from my Design Thinking journal :D
Picasso will be proud...

Yes...this is the method our group chose to escape from Cockatoo Island.

By utilizing the abundant population of seagulls, we're able to use them as a power source to lift our basket made of branches into the sky.Since cockatoo island is an island surrounded by water, and water surrounded by land, it doesn't matter where we go...we'll reach land eventually :D
When land appears beneath us, throw food down towards it and the seagulls will follow!

Life as a Design Student

So it's not all fun and games. I know. There's a few things, I learnt and hope to share with those aspiring to be designers. I'd like to share these 'few things'.

1) All nighters/ late night sleeping (4/5am in the morning) will become the norm. The sleeping pattern of a design student (or a designer for that matter) is entirely relative to the amount of work she/he has. So there is really no set design pattern. Sometimes you go on without sleep for days at a time...sometimes you find yourself napping on trains and taking afternoon naps (yea, I thought they were only for old people too). Sleep will become something you'll have to sacrifice, if you want to pursue your careers in design.

2) Be financially prepared. I have spent approximately more than FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS to date buying paper (with different GSM), cardboard, foamcore and process journals alone. Not to mention the rulers and other equipment we had to buy. I'm guessing my total spending will be around the thousands by the next couple of weeks (I still haven't purchased a drawing board and I still have to buy more copic markers). So...GET A JOB IF YOU WANT TO STUDY DESIGN!
3) Papercuts will be abundant. I get an average of 6 papercuts DAILY. Maybe that's just me...but...be warned.
 4) Your shoulders ought to be prepared for heavy-carrying. It's advised that you bring all your design equipment to every tutorial. That's a lot of heavy stuff...lots of paper, lots of equipment. My shoulders are dying slowly. They scream in pain under the pressure of those straps.

5) You will have no social life beyond those in your course and maybe...if you're lucky...your faculty. A Design student (not sure about Architecture) will have such a heavy workload...they will NOT have time to go to the bar with friends. They will have so much work that they won't have time to laugh it out with friends in the weekend. The only time they have off will be during the holidays at the end of the year...in which you're advised/encouraged to get a part time job related to your course.

6) Eyebags/dark circles will become a trait. BUT FOR ME ITS ALREADY DONE. It doesn't matter if I sleep early or late, dark circles will forever remain a part of my face =( even with concealer.

7) MEASURING SKILLS IS CRUCIAL. If you can't measure something DOWN TO THE EXACT MILLIMETER then you're screwed. Because everything in design is about SCALE...1mm on your design plan can mean 1m on the actual room/building.

8) You can however, enjoy the luxury of watching television/dramas while doing your 'homework'. Unlike writing essays or doing reports, when you're doing 'design homework', you're basically drawing...and you can most certainly watch tv while doing that. I have honed this skill to the best of my ability during those hard HSC Body of Work days :D

9) Doing "work" will not only be about sitting at your desk, writing and writing. Going to concerts/exhibitions will be your 'work', going overseas will be 'work'. It's a great excuse to get out and have some fun while searching for "inspiration". Being culturally aware is VERY important.

10) It will be rewarding. Seriously...at the end of the day...after all that hard work...it's all worth it. To have someone linger over your work and say, "wow...that's crazy." or "how did you do that?" or "that's sooo good!"...it warms you up from top to bottom and all your tiredness vanishes like THAT.

=) In the end, I love this course. I've met some lovely people and made some lovely friend. The work will be hard but I know I'll be able to get through them!!

PS: If there's grammar errors or typos, please excuse them. I'm rather sleepy right now hehe :)

Jess Cooper's Party

This post has been edited as of 11:45PM 14/03/2011 (as suggested)
Something quite sad that's happening on Facebook.
Okay...so there was a girl...called Jess Cooper. Who lived in Chatswood (that's actually not very far from where I live haha)...and she made a facebook event page on Facebook to celebrate her 16th birthday. And things...kinda got out of hand.

She had originally intended to invite her grade but because she didn't activate the privacy setting, she got more people coming than she had bargained for. After she removed the event (and rescheduled), an anonymous facebook user created a FALSE profile of her and reCREATED the event...

The facebook event page now has over 160 000 people "attending". What's more, the event page has her real address on it.

This facebook event was REcreated by an anonymous facebook user.
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=179709838742592#!/event.php?eid=179709838742592

Article from the Daily Telegraph:
IT WAS supposed to be a small house party with a few friends to celebrate her sweet 16th birthday.
But 15-year-old Chatswood girl Jess was forced to call off her birthday bash yesterday after the party's details -- advertised for everyone to see on Facebook -- went viral and more than 80,000 people accepted the invitation.
The Year 10 student originally intended to invite her grade only, but told her guests via the social networking site they could bring friends.
Within 24 hours, the party had more than 20,000 people listed as "attending", prompting the schoolgirl to send an unhappy message cancelling the party: "it's f***in off."
The invitation appears to have been hijacked by members of the notorious chat group Anonymous, resulting in it going viral worldwide.
A number of the postings on her party invitation Facebook site were using the Anonymous symbol as their own.
Yesterday, the numbers continued to rise, with the number of guests reaching 80,000 just after 6pm.
On her invitation, Jess said she "didn't have enough time to invite everyone" and invited others to do it on her behalf: "[It's an] open house party as long as it doesn't get out of hand."
One guest posted on the party's wall: "That Corey Worthington kid has nothing on this", referring to the 500 guests who attended a now notorious house party in Melbourne after it was advertised on Facebook.
Jess's father, who asked that his name be withheld, said the invitation was "a complete hoax". "My girl is an innocent victim," he said.
He said Jess had invited "a few friends" but did not
know how to use the privacy settings on Facebook to stop strangers from viewing her party information.
"She was just anxious about whether anyone would show up to her birthday," he said.
Chatswood Inspector Peter Yeomans said police had intervened to prevent unwanted people turning up on the night.
"It is a huge number of hits and could potentially turn very serious," Insp Yeomans said.
The news came on the back of an expert's warning that children as young as seven were being cyber bullied.
A Queensland report said "delusional" parents were enabling the cyber attacks by allowing their children to create Facebook pages at prohibited ages.

But apparently people are still going to go. Hm...poor girl. I don't think she ever imagined her 16th will turn out like this. Hopefully thing's won't turn out as bad as Corey Worthington's. Besides...I live so close it'll be kind of crazy seeing all mess.
Who's actually going to turn up though? I wonder...

And this guy...Mike...he actually visited her house. Taking photos with his mates etc.
Guess she really is FAMOUS now. For all the wrong reasons though. And not entirely her fault.

It is true that it was her mistake for not setting the facebook events pageon private and whether or not that was INTENTIONAL is unknown. Some people think it was for popularity. Some think she just didn't know how to use facebook. Well, it's kind of hard to tell what she wanted now that everything's blown out of proportions.
But for things to get THIS out of hand...you do have to feel sorry for the girl. After all, she just wanted to celebrate her sweet 16th.
I hope she does alert the authorities :( and to everyone out there, please cut her some slack :(
PS: Yes...at first when I found out, I also send the facebook event link to my friends. But now I genuinely feel sorry for her (for this to get THIS out of hand) and regret it.

Japan Tsunami
So I heard about the horrid earthquake (8.9 on the Richter Scale) and tsunami (10m high) in Japan today :(
What's with all the natural disasters? Cyclone Yasi...Christchurch earthquake and now Japan!! All within 2months :(
Hang in there Japan. You'll pull through. My heart goes out to all the victims.

Even for a country so prepared for earthquakes...this is big. D:

Latest Update as of 2011-03-13
Copied from UK's The Guardian
  • Three days after a devastating earthquake unleashed a tsunami in which at least 10,000 people are feared dead, Japan on Sunday faced a deepening nuclear crisis and the prospect of another quake as powerful as the one that laid waste to vast stretches of its north-eastern coastline.
  • The prime minister, Naoto Kan, called the disaster "Japan's most severe crisis since the war ended 65 years ago". He called on the country to unite and said its future would be decided by the response to this crisis.
  • The threat of further seismic shifts and tsunami is far from over. As rescue teams from more than 70 countries and tens of thousands of Japanese troops descended on the disaster zone, meteorological agency officials warned there was a 70% chance of a magnitude-7.0 earthquake striking the region in the next three days.
  • The meteorological agency upgraded last Friday's earthquake, the fifth biggest in the world for a century, from magnitude 8.8 to 9.0. What began as a violent seismic shift lasting minutes has left a permanent geological legacy: the US Geological Survey said the force of the quake had shifted the island a distance of 8ft (2.5 metres).

Puffy 3 Tone Series - Brown PLUS Korean BBQ

Brand + Type: G&G Dueba Puffy 3 Tone Brown (but to me it looks more hazel than anything!!)
More info: I must say, it's quite comfortable. This is what I looked like after the BBQ (about 3~4 hours later). I took it just as I was about to take them off because I thought it would be a good idea to review it. The left one did slide a little.
It IS however, extremely comfy. I love the Puffy 3 Tone series...they look natural. I like natural looking ones. Obviously people know they're not my real eye colour but people don't go "oh you're DEFINITELY wearing contacts".
Where to buy this? I'm afraid you'll have to get them online. I suggest Kiwiberry1 Collection because it's affordable AND you know they'll ship it in time. You do need to pay via Paypal or credit card.

But yes, enough about that =) here's some bonus pictures of my delicious (BUT OILY) Korean BBQ with my family at Strathfield =D

Yes...this is my mother

Quick Update: Uni has started!!!

Just a super quick update since I've been abandoning my blog for a while now. Yes, university lessons has finally started and I've seriously been caught up in everything.

Right now, I'm trying to balance school, work AND house duties (YES MY HOUSE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION OMG). It's really, really hard and I go to bed everyday with sore muscles.

I'm also financially insecure at the moment because all the equipment I have to buy is seriously making my wallet very light. Some of the things I have to buy includes new process diaries, A3 Drawing Board with T Square, steel rulers (300mm and 1000mm), eraser shields, graphite pencils (8B to 7H), 8m measuring tape, butter paper, A2 Cutting Mat and preferably I need to get one of those slanted designing tables.
Luckily, I don't have to buy any textbooks...at least not this semester.

Also, the weather's been very mean since it's super hot.

Okay, that's all for now.

PS: I cleaned out my table so that the only things I have on my table is my Wacom Tablet, paintbrushes, copic markers and everything else artsey designy.
My mum was very impressed (y)
